Hopkins
"Education for sustainable development encompasses a vision that involves
acquiring the knowledge, skills, perspectives and values that will guide
and motivate people to lead sustainable livelihoods and participate in our
democratic society."
Charles
is an international leader in the area of Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD). Based at York University, he is a senior advisor to
UNESCO's project, “Educating for a Sustainable Future”. He is the
executive director of the John Dearness Environmental Society and an
advisor to Environment Canada's Ecological Monitoring and Assessment
Network. Previously, he was Superintendent of Curriculum with the Toronto
Board of Education where he founded Canada's largest environmental field
study centre. Charles coordinates an international network of teacher
education institutions working towards the reorientation of teacher
education to address Education for Sustainable Development.
